Most project studio vocal recordings are made with cardioid or unidirectional mics; these pick up less sound from the sides and rear. However, omni mics impart a more open, natural sound and can aid a singer who’s nasal or boxy. Working closer to an omni mic can yield the same “direct sound to room sound” ratio as a cardioid.
