Great Scott! Gibson and Epiphone Go Back to the Future

Some guitars don’t just make history — they rewrite it.

During the unforgettable Enchantment Under the Sea dance scene in Back to the Future, a cherry-red Gibson ES-345 became as iconic as the DeLorean itself. When Marty McFly (played by Michael J. Fox) launched into “Johnny B. Goode,” the guitar bridged 1955, 1985, and every era since — forever linking Gibson craftsmanship with one of the most electrifying moments in film and music history.

A Collector’s Dream: The Gibson Custom “1955” ES-345

Today, Gibson Custom has officially unveiled the Back to the Future “1955” ES-345 Collector’s Edition — a breathtaking recreation of the film’s legendary guitar. Only 88 guitars were built (a knowing nod to the 88 mph needed for time travel), each one handcrafted in Nashville by Gibson’s Custom Shop artisans.

With its thinline maple-poplar-maple body, solid centerblock, and aged gold Bigsby B7 vibrato, this Murphy Lab-aged masterpiece captures every nuance of the original. Even its single 12th-fret parallelogram inlay mirrors the rare anomaly found on the film’s prop guitar. The unpotted Custombuckers, hide-glued mahogany neck, and period-correct aniline Cherry Red finish make this one of the most historically detailed recreations Gibson has ever made.

Our single Gibson Custom “1955” ES-345 Collector’s Edition arrived at Chuck Levin’s — and found a home almost immediately. It’s no surprise: this is the kind of guitar that truly transcends time.
