Gibson LG-2 50s Original Mahogany/Sitka Spruce Acoustic Guitar - Vintage Sunburst

A Small Body with Rich, Balanced Tone - The Gibson LG-2 50s Original Acoustic Guitar with Vintage Sunburst Finish

Introduced in 1942 during the celebrated Gibson “Banner” era, the LG-2 was developed as the successor to the earlier L-00. Debuting alongside iconic models such as the J-45 and Southern Jumbo, it quickly earned a reputation for delivering remarkable volume, warmth, and balance from a compact body size. The LG-2 50s Original continues that tradition, offering players a smaller-bodied alternative to larger acoustics while now featuring the Gibson-exclusive, custom-voiced Baggs HiFi DNA pickup system. Designed to faithfully reproduce the guitar’s voice when amplified, the system captures the natural tonal character of the instrument and the subtleties of every performance.

The LG-2 50s Original returns this beloved model to the Gibson acoustic lineup with specifications inspired by sought-after examples from the 1950s. Long requested by players, this compact Workhorse alternative delivers classic Gibson craftsmanship and tone in a highly comfortable format. Its construction pairs solid mahogany back and sides with a solid Sitka spruce top, supported by traditional scalloped X-bracing that helps produce a rich, articulate acoustic voice. The mahogany body is accented with three-ply top binding and single-ply binding on the back for a timeless appearance.

The mahogany neck features a Rounded profile and is joined to the body using a compound dovetail neck joint assembled with hot hide glue. An unbound rosewood fretboard is fitted with 20 standard frets and decorated with understated mother-of-pearl dot inlays. Traditional details continue with a sloped rectangular rosewood bridge featuring a closed slot design and mother-of-pearl dot accents. A bone nut and saddle contribute to the guitar’s responsive feel and tonal transfer, while TUSQ bridge pins provide secure string anchoring and reliable performance. Grover Strap tuners with cream buttons offer dependable tuning stability and complement the guitar’s vintage-inspired aesthetics alongside its tortoise teardrop pickguard. Compared to some wartime LG-2 guitars that featured mahogany tops, the solid Sitka spruce top of the LG-2 50s Original delivers a brighter, more resonant, and evenly balanced tonal response. As a result, it is well suited for a wide variety of musical styles and techniques. Its smaller body dimensions also make it particularly comfortable for players who prefer a more manageable instrument than a larger-bodied acoustic. In addition, its distinct voice makes it a valuable option in the studio, providing tonal variety when layered alongside larger acoustic guitars on recordings.

The LG-2 50s Original now comes equipped with the new Gibson-exclusive Baggs HiFi DNA pickup system. This active design utilizes a pair of lightweight sensors mounted to the internal bridge plate, each paired with optimized preamps for exceptional amplified performance. The system delivers a full, natural acoustic sound while accurately preserving the instrument’s unique character and without affecting its unplugged tone. The Baggs HiFi DNA system also offers feedback resistance comparable to that of under-saddle pickup designs. Convenient soundhole-mounted volume and tone controls provide quick adjustments during performance while remaining discreet and largely hidden from view. Whether you’re searching for an inspiring “couch guitar,” a dependable companion for live performances, or a distinctive acoustic voice to expand your recording palette, the LG-2 50s Original is an excellent choice. A Gibson hardshell case is included for secure protection at home and on the road.
