Gibson Southern Jumbo Original Acoustic Guitar - Vintage Sunburst

Classic Tone - The Gibson Southern Jumbo Original Acoustic Guitar with Vintage Sunburst Finish

Since its introduction in the 1940s, the Southern Jumbo has earned a reputation as a versatile acoustic capable of everything from driving country accompaniment to expressive blues lead work. Original World War II-era examples are among the most sought-after Gibson flat-top guitars on the vintage market, and the Southern Jumbo Original carries that legacy forward for today’s players. Built on the same trusted platform as the J-45 but distinguished by more refined appointments, the Southern Jumbo has long offered its own unique personality and visual appeal. It now features the Gibson-exclusive, custom-voiced Baggs HiFi DNA pickup system, delivering outstanding realism when amplified while faithfully capturing the guitar’s natural tone and playing dynamics.

The Southern Jumbo Original features a solid Sitka spruce top paired with solid mahogany back and sides, enhanced by traditional scalloped X-bracing. This classic round-shoulder design delivers the warmth, balance, and versatility that have made the model a favorite across generations of players. Equally suited for strummed chord work, flatpicked passages, and blues-inspired leads, it offers a responsive voice across a wide range of musical applications. Multi-ply binding accents both the top and back, while a gloss nitrocellulose lacquer finish adds to the guitar’s vintage-inspired appearance.

Its mahogany neck is carved to a comfortable Slim Taper profile and joined to the body using a compound dovetail neck-to-body joint. The rosewood fretboard features a 12-inch radius, 20 standard frets, and elegant mother-of-pearl split parallelogram inlays. Signature Southern Jumbo appointments include double-antiqued multi-ply binding, nickel open-back tuners, and a mother-of-pearl Gibson logo and crown inlay on the headstock. Together, these details give the instrument a more elaborate aesthetic while maintaining the same proven foundations shared with its J-45 counterpart.

A traditional belly-up rosewood bridge is equipped with a bone saddle and TUSQ bridge pins, while a bone nut contributes to a responsive playing feel and reliable performance. The guitar’s vintage-inspired look is completed by a 50s-style tortoise pickguard. These classic features underscore the Southern Jumbo’s long-standing position as the more visually ornate member of Gibson’s round-shoulder acoustic family without sacrificing the practicality and dependability that players expect.

The Southern Jumbo Original is now outfitted with the Gibson-exclusive Baggs HiFi DNA pickup system. This active electronics package employs two lightweight sensors mounted to the internal bridge plate and paired with individually optimized preamps. The result is a rich, natural amplified sound that accurately conveys the instrument’s character while leaving its unplugged acoustic performance unchanged. The Baggs HiFi DNA system also provides gain-before-feedback performance comparable to that of traditional under-saddle pickup designs. Convenient volume and tone controls are discreetly mounted inside the soundhole, allowing for quick adjustments while remaining virtually unnoticed by an audience. From open-chord accompaniment and fingerpicked passages to blues leads and beyond, the Southern Jumbo Original delivers the versatility of a classic Gibson round-shoulder acoustic together with the elevated appointments that have defined the model for decades. A Gibson hardshell case is included for dependable protection whether traveling to the studio, the stage, or anywhere in between.
